Our Story
How it Started
After roasting coffee in his own roastery since 2010 and receiving accolades for having one of the best coffees around, the passion and love for coffee set inventor and co-founder, Julian Platt, on a mission to revolutionise the coffee roasting industry, “by making coffee roasting available and accessible to anyone who wants to do it”, as Julian says.
Research & Development
It was with the new Specialty Coffee trend on the rise and much research done by Julian, that he decided the best results achieved for this new trend in coffee would be an Air-Roaster and acquired an old type air-roaster at the time.
Although the Air-Roaster produced amazing results, the technology fell short of many requirements that Julian was looking for in roasting, so he started to design and build his own roaster from a wish list that he compiled from his experience in roasting for many years.
He then moved into a factory with two engineers, a Mechanical Engineer worked with him on the fabrication of the roaster, while an Electrical Engineer worked on the electrics, software and brains of the machine. Julian then further revealed his wish list for this
Air-Roaster and together they built the first prototype with many ground-breaking improvements made to air-roasting technology today.
And, the AIR-MOTION ROASTER was born.

Drum roasting is the traditional way to roast coffee. We believe “tradition” can serve us well, but we want to avoid being mired in a tradition, if it makes us resistant to innovation and change. We are here to innovate, disrupt and set ourselves apart, turning tradition on its head and elevating ourselves to new heights.

Pride and Honour
As with many of our clients, it was with Pride and Honour that Skyrocket Coffee chose Air-Motion Roasters as their roaster of choice in the setting up of a coffee business in the pursuit of their Dream, and as always the unforgettable Journey began.
Their Story
We were two people going through the motions of life, searching for more joy and a sense of purpose when a good friend brought a life-changing book into our orbit. With a cup of coffee in one hand and a book in the other, we got to reading.
The book gave us a new perspective that ignited a passion in both of us for self-discovery and understanding. A few years, many books, and lots of coffee later, we began designing a life that we had previously only dreamt about.
The requirements for this new life were more fun, adventures, lakes, lots of sun, long summers, and a business we could build together. With that as our guide, the location was identified, and Texas Hill Country would be our destination. We packed up and left the only place we had ever known, the Pacific Northwest.
Armed with books, coffee, faith, and determination, we began the journey to our dreams. We drove for a week to Central Texas and then explored our new state for a place to call home. We settled in a small lake town outside of Austin.
Along our journey, we realized that we wanted to share our story with the world in hopes of inspiring others. We were determined to pay the gift that we had been given forward. Almost immediately, we knew the best way to do that was to start where it all began, with a cup of coffee and a book!
Our mission became clear; we would set out to change the world a cup and a book at a time. With that, the idea for Skyrocket Coffee was born.
